project get healthy: crossfit

June 22nd, 2012 at 3:55 pm . Posted in Chicago, crossfit, project get healthy .

Two days ago, I took an intro class at CrossFit Chicago. Now if you know anything about CrossFit, you know it’s a bit intense. Needless to say, I was pretty freaking scared to walk into the place. Then I walked in and saw a work out in process and almost walked back out.

Then someone basically took me by the hand and said, you are totally in the wrong room and she lead me to a quieter room with only two others and a way less intense vibe. My fellow CrossFit intro-ers and I learned a bit about the gym and what CrossFit is and all that good stuff.

Our coach for the evening, Sara, then ran us through a baseline workout. This consisted of 500 meters on a rowing machine, 40 squats, 30 sit ups, 20 push ups and 10 pull ups. And we had to do it as fast as we could.

I was the only girl (and a very out of shape girl at that) with a group of four pretty in shape guys and I definitely finished last by a couple minutes. Those guys though? They cheered me on and were right there with me until I finished.

My baseline work out time was 8 minutes and 15 seconds. I felt like I was going to die after that – a not even ten minute work out.

The past two days I have been sore as hell. It hurts to sit down, it hurts to go up and down stairs, it hurts to raise my arms. Everything hurts.

But I’m going back, because even though it hurts – I feel fucking awesome.

So during July, you’ll probably find me in the box at CrossFit Chicago working hard at getting fit and strong and sweating my ass off. This post right here will hold me accountable – I’ll check in at the end of the month with my progress.

Oooh, CrossFit is so awesome! My friend Holly has done it for a long time now and it’s changed her life. She also has awesome Paleo recipes if you’re looking for inspiration: http://www.hollywouldifshecould.net

    Proud of you, lady!

@Amy: Oh! Thanks for the link to her blog. I’ve been eating about 90% Paleo for the past three weeks or so and I love it. I just feel great. Plus, the weight loss is awesome. I’m going full Paleo July 1. That will be my next blog post probably :)

Congrats! I used to make fun of gym bunny types, now I’m almost addicted to this style of exercise (group classes, variety classes). Let me know if you ever want to take one together.

The hurt gets less intense, I promise. It’s true for any work out. I think of myself as pretty in shape but if I go a month without doing a certain class at the gym, I feel like I’m dying for the next two days. It gets easier!

Totally. I’m really excited about it, even the hurt, I guess. That just means I’m doing a good job!

Hey, catching up on blog posts, and this post inspires me. I’ve been looking into crossfit for awhile, but it’s kind of intimidating just starting out. I’d rather start at a location. did you do the 1-on-1 deal or just go to a free class on an intro day?

@poodlegoose: It is pretty intimidating, but what’s awesome is they scale each workout to what you can handle. I went to a free intro class and then my gym ended up having a deal for women’s only classes so I signed up for that. I’d definitely check it out! I’m going to my first official full-hour class tonight.
