top five: the movies I never get sick of edition

Friday, June 25th, 2010

It’s about that time for another Top Five. The first time around I shared my top five babes. Now we have movies that I will never ever get sick of.

Are they Oscar worthy? Probably not.

(They totally are in my head)

Are they absolutely fantastic? YES.

Almost Famous. This is my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. Forever.

Clueless. DUH. I shouldn’t even have to say more.

Mean Girls. If you know even the slightest about me, you’re not surprised with this one. I can quote it in and out and back and forth. It’s sad slash completely AWESOME.

Some Like It Hot. I saw this for the first time in my high school film class and fell in love with it. It’s hilarious.

The Devil Wears Prada. I own this movie on dvd but watch it every single time it comes on tv. For awhile, it was on like, weekly. Obsessed.

Your top five. GO.

road trippin’

{ via }

On Tuesday, I’ll be making my way to Denver for almost a week.

OnStar invited me to participate in this epic road trip to get there and check out the NAHJ Convention before heading on back to Chicago on Sunday.

Needless to say, I’m pretty excited. The conference should be super interesting and great for networking. It’s been a very long time since I’ve taken part on a road trip so that should be fun. We’ll be stopping at a couple places on the way; do I have an readers in Nebraska or Iowa? If so, I’ll be passing on through! Is there even anything to do in those states?

DO THEY EVEN EXIST?!

Anyway, I’m even more excited because I’ve never been to Colorado and I have a few lovely friends out there, so I’m planning on seeing them too!

This is where I need your help, road trippers! What are the essentials? I’ll be making a Target run tomorrow night to pick up a few odds and ends. Anything you think I ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE for my trip?

So far, I have a fully loaded iPod and my big headphones for when music in the car might not be agreeable to my snobbish tastes. I have a couple books as well to pass the time. The car will have wifi so it’s not like I’ll be completely dead to the world, but it’s good to have options, right?

Road trip must haves.

GO.

C25K and a plea to the shoe gods

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Here’s the thing, I don’t run unless someone is chasing me.

I basically haven’t ran since I played softball in high school. That’s part of the reason I don’t run. Playing sports screwed my body up and I’m basically broken from the knees down and I have a jacked up shoulder from pitching.

I’m basically 80. I know. SHUT UP.

Well the other day I decided I was going to attempt Couch 2 5K because I hear it’s a good beginner running program. So I got on some old (but super cute) Nike Air Maxes, uploaded a dj mix of my favorite songs to my iPhone and downloaded the C25K iPhone app (because I love any excuse to play with my iPhone, duh) and got myself all psyched up. Then I hit the bike path outside my house and died.

Shin splits and hurty ankles and it was all kinds of awful and I was like, GOODBYE FOREVER.

A couple days after that, I decided I was going to buy new running shoes if I was really going to do this. I went to Fleet Feet to get fitted and the dude measured my feet and watched me jog and all that stuff. He explained that I land on the outsides on my feet then sort of collapse on the insides. He had some fancy word for it that I can’t remember, but from what I got out of it, my feet are kind of flat or I have very low arches. Whatever.

He picked out some shoes to try on and I decided I liked one pair until he was all, “those are only $140″ and then I died.

AGAIN.

So I went with my second choice which were still $95 or some nonsense.

I’m attempting to restart C25K tonight now that my feet are properly outfitted. If you never hear from me after this, I probably died again and my body is probably somewhere along the bike path in South Chicago.

Also, can we just discuss how most running shoes are ugly? I know it’s more about practical and not pretty but dude, if I spend over $100 on shoes I AT LEAST WANT THEM TO BE CUTE.

Not hideous, but definitely not cute. What’s a girl gotta do to get some stylish shoes?

Dear Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo,

There is a demand for cute running shoes (FROM ME), so can you get on that designer running shoe line? People would be all over it. Swear.

Love,

Jamie

P.S. I made a C25K list over at Shoptopia. You should probs check that out!

on who i am

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

I’m the girl whose bangs are too long and nail polish is chipped 75% of the time. I’m the girl who starts stripping the second she walks in the door – pants and bra off, leggings and vneck tee on. I’m more comfortable in a pair of old Nike Dunks than I am in heels, but I never fail to flat iron my hair even if I’m just staying in. I’m the least photogenic person ever and always end up making silly faces.

I know people and have acquaintances and friends, but keep my circle of close friends small. And I’m fiercely protective of them. Fair weather friends aren’t my scene and I don’t put up with bullshit.

I can run my mouth with the best of them and I am very opinionated, but I’ve learned to keep it in check. Most of the time… And I’ll be the first to admit that I’m kind of a snob. I know what I like, I know what’s good and I might be judging you for thinking otherwise. But I’ll be damned if I’m not one of the nicest and most real people you’ll ever meet.

I’m the girl who picks wine based on the prettiness of the names and labels. Most of my gadgets (MacBook, iPod, iPhone) are pink, but chances are you’ll rarely ever see me wearing the color. I love handmade and crafty things, but can’t do it myself for the life of me. I can quote Mean Girls almost word for word and do so on regular (and probably annoying) basis. I have stacks of books all over the place and can spend days holed up reading and be perfectly happy. I geek out over music and probably have the oddest collection you ever did see.

I believe pinky promises are still serious business, and that strawberry milkshakes are one of the best inventions ever. I could eat mac and cheese every day of the week, and think carbs are the WORST invention ever. I’m a sentimental kind of gal and can think of reasons to hold on to pretty much anything.

I wish more than anything I could pull off a half sleeve tattoo, but I just don’t think I’d look right. So I plan on getting several other tattoos and finding me a cute, tattooed boy instead. It’s a fair trade.

I’m the girl who gets nervous talking to new people and never know what to say for fear of sounding like an idiot. I constantly worry I’m bothering people so if I’m quiet, that’s probably why. But when I finally feel comfortable, I’d love nothing more than to sit down over drinks and talk forever.

In the past year and a half, I found myself and realized what I’m truly capable of. I’ve learned when to fight for something and when to let go. I’ve learned that sometimes when you think shit just can’t get any worse, it does. You just keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep on.

Don’t let it make you hard. Let it make you stronger.

I have.

summer days

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Chicago has finally decided to give us some decent weather and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been spending my sunny days outside on a blanket with a book and my crappy old iPod. I read Allie’s book Stay, in one sitting and it was fantastic. Stay tuned for more on that!

I’ve been trying to soak up some sun, so I can stop being the whitest Mexican girl in the history of the world and so far it’s working okay. I may get skin cancer from basically roasting in oil, but whatever, I’m working on a great tan.

PRIORITIES, PEOPLE. I HAVE THEM.

On Friday, I got a manicure (THAT’S ALREADY CHIPPING) and pedicure (my first of the season) and my fingers and toes* are done up nicely in Lincoln Park After Dark. I rounded out my weekend by purchasing seasons one and two of Dawson’s Creek because they were on sale for $20 at Target. $20 for BOTH. #paceyandjoeyforever

I’ve also been cranking out shopping lists for Shoptopia, which has been a total blast and a burden on my wallet. A very pretty burden that I don’t mind one bit because it comes in the form of dresses, bags and shoes.

Research is expensive, dudes.

Go check out some of my recent posts: 15 Super Cute and Stylish Laptop Bags, Maxi Dresses and Summer White Sundresses. Take a look around and get to list making. It’s way fun and I bet you’ll see a few familiar faces around the site!

Also, can someone in Chicago please have a cookout? I’m pretty sure it’s all I need in life.

* How do we feel about matching polish on the fingers and toes?
