bookish (part one)

July 7th, 2009 at 12:00 am . Posted in books .

(no, this is not my bookshelf but damn, I wish it were)

I know I’ve mentioned the library a lot lately and that I’m flying through books. This is what happens when I have a lot of time on my hands. I read read read.

Well I’m hoping soon that I land a job and won’t have this much time on my hands. Because I am SO ready to get my hands on a new project and dig in. I would like more of a challenge than deciding what stack of books to hit next.

But for the moment, especially while I’m going through 3-4 books a week and really enjoying it, I thought I’d start posting what I read once a week. Also because so many of you have been asking what I’ve been reading too!

In the past two weeks, I’ve done mainly chick lit which is probably why I’ve been going through them so fast. So here we go by author –

Jennifer Weiner

Meg Cabot

Janet Evanovich

Jen Lancaster

I really loved Meg Cabot’s The Queen of Babble series. Some great quick reads right there. I’m waiting for one more book in her Heather Wells series to come in and then I’ll start those. I wasn’t particularly impressed with She Went All the Way and Every Boy’s Got one. But that’s chick lit for you, it’s a hit or miss.

As for the Janet Evanovich book, I don’t think I’m feeling her Stephanie Plum series. I think it’s the way she writes. It was very hard for me to get into but since I’ve heard so many good things, I picked up the next two in the series. We’ll see how book two goes and if I want to continue.

I’m sure I’ll have more to report back on next week in the book department.

As always if you have suggestions, let me know. As you can see, I just can’t get enough reading material right now!

I’m doing a book swap and you should totally join in! I just read a Meg Cabot book, but I forget what it was called. It was written in an email format, a series of emails back and forth. Kind of weird, but it was a quick read.

You should read the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. It’s my favorite book series ever. It’s really long (6 books so far that are 600-800ish pages each) but its amazing.

I got 1/2 way through “In Her Shoes” and never finished it and i’m not really sure why. I liked it, but it was one of those periods where I was incredibly busy and couldn’t actually sink into a book. And that book is long. Maybe one day i’ll get around to re-reading it.

I’m reading a British chick-lit book right now called “Chasing Daisy.” It’s really addictive and incredibly shocking for chick lit. And I think that’s why I like it – it doesn’t play by the rules.

Also, have you checked out Sarah Dessen? She’s YA, not chick lit. I just got into her and I LOVE HER BOOKS.

I love the Stephanie Plum series. Someone recently got me into the Sookie Stackhouse novels and they are fun, fast reads. I’ve always enjoyed the Sue Grafton alphabet series but they are rather dated now I guess since I started reading them as a teen (A is Alibi, B is Burglar, etc). They are less chick-y and more detective-y.

I too go through many books. I love to own books for whatever weird reason so I’ve taken to going to Barnes and Noble online and buying bargain books. You will be surprised at how many best sellers you can get on there. Plus most are under 5 bucks!

If you are looking for a teenage easy read check out along for the ride by sarah dessen. It’s easy to get sucked in.

I just don’t get the Meg Cabot thing. Not for me. I don’t know why.

I do heart Marian Keyes, though, as far as chick lit is concerned. Even better if you can get the original British versions of her books as the American ones are altered, losing lots of the British flavor, and also for some reason several of the scenes are cut.

Meg Cabot is my favorite! I loved the Heather Wells series, too! Do you have an inside scoop of when the next book comes out? I’m so on that if you do!

Also, despite the character in “…Shopaholic” being a little annoying, Sophie Kinsella’s books are great quick-reads, too.

Then, you can’t go wrong with Harry and Mr. Cullen.

Also, if you’re looking for something with a little more meat, “Pillars of the Earth” and its sequal “World Without End” are excellent, but they are 900-page historical novels.

Oh- The Other Boleyn Girl is good. The Red Tent by Anita Dimant is a great book. And of course, the Wicked Series are fun!

I bascially just gave you my entire bookshelf!

I’m sorry that you don’t have a good project, but I love that you have all this time to read. Having time to read is one of my favorite things about the summer.

I couldn’t get into the Stephanie Plum books. I tried, I really did, but it was a no go for me.

I just read the first Sookie Stackhouse book, and I thought it was a lot of fun. Did I recommend The Secret of Lost Things to you already? I can’t remember. Also, you should check out Without Reservations. It’s a wonderful travel narrative. Three Cups of Tea is good too, and also Animals in Translation if you are looking for some non-fiction. I could go on and on…

I’ve been hearing good things about the first three authors (already read all of Jen Lancaster’s) from some of my friends, might be worth checking out.

I really like Jennifer Weiner books; the more she writes, the better her books are =) I recommend Little Earthquakes and Certain Girls by J. Weiner.

Also, the Girls Guide to Hunting & Fishing by Melissa Banks is pretty good. It combines (in my opinion), love, self-searching and chick lit. It’s one of my favorite books ever!

I also highly recommend Mario Puzo. He wrote “The Godfather,” and several other really great books, all centered around the Mafia but still intriguing, intense and well written!

    Lauren Weisenburger

I know you said you weren’t into the Stephenie Plum books too much, but I just have to say that I love them! I am surprised that you don’t like them! Janet Evanovich’s other books are good, also. I really like the ‘Full’ series. (Each book title begins with ‘Full’).

re: Jennifer Weiner. I was not a big fan of In Her Shoes but I REALLY liked Good In Bed (but not the sequel as much), and also Little Earthquakes. So I recommend those too.

If you like anything in the paranormal realm, I HIGHLY recommend Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. Starts with Bitten. All of her books are great.

I also recommend Charlaine Harris highly. She has a number of series, some paranormal and some not; all of them good.
The Southern Vampire books, of course, being what True Blood was based on. There’s also the Harper Connelly books, about a lady that was hit by lightning and developed this ability to locate dead bodies. Then there’s the Aurora Teagarden series, about a mostly-ordinary librarian who gets caught up in various murder mysteries. Or the Lily Bard series, another ‘ordinary person (sort of ordinary, anyway) involved in murder mysteries’ series. I like all of them.

    That’s just for starters. :)

Also, I covet the library in the photo SO HARD. SO. HARD. Whereever did you find that picture??
