working hard or hardly working?

I love my job. Seriously, it’s going to suck when I have to get a “real” job when I graduate with a nursing degree (if ever). I mean, I get to color, build towers, shoot hoops on a Little Tikes basket ball hoop, teach the 2 year old to count in Spanish and I get paid for it. Of course, there are days when I’m exhausted from working 11 hours and feel like I am going to scream if I have to hear the Wonder Pet’s screechy voices singing about saving the baby triceratops one more time. But really, I can’t complain too much. Turning the key and hearing the pitter pat of little toddler feet that can’t get to the door fast enough to rush me in and sit me down to show me something or other, is not the worst thing to have when you walk in the door. Two babies who are excited to see me everyday and shower me with hugs and kisses? Can’t beat that.

My job is awesome.

My favorite thing to do at work is read books. I lovelovelove children’s books. Last Christmas, the little guy got Where the Wild Things Are and Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. Two of my very favorite books. This year he is getting The Giving Tree and baby girl is getting a plushy taggies book because she’s still little and loves to put everything in her mouth, she will love the textures though! Mom and Dad are getting a photo album of pictures I’ve taken while with the kids. This way they have cute photos of the kids and get to see what we do while they are at work. All kids get books though, families I work for, my own family, family friends. I have a little list of essentials.

Help me add to my list.

Do you have a favorite book from when you were a kid?

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish! And I love WTWTA and AATTHNGVBD (I have to abbreviate cause they’re long and I’m lazy). In Spanish, it’s Alexander y el dia terrible, horrible, espantoso, horroroso. I love saying it in a Spanish accent all dramatic like (TERRIIIIIIIIIIIIIBLEEEE! HORRIIIIIIIBLEEEE!) I know, I’m weird.

I can’t see the images at work, so I feel like I’m missing out :( Anyway, I LOVE Dr. Seuss.

The picture album thing is very sweet too.

I don’t remember books from when I was a kid, maybe my parents didn’t read to me. BOO.

Being a mom now, I still can’t think of great books that I *do* read to my kids. Shameful.

I love your present ideas for the mom and dad. They will love that!

I loved Goodnight Moon, The Hungry Caterpillar and Runaway Bunny.

My sister bought “Goodnight Gorilla” for our nephew and it was an instant family favorite. I love that book!

Oooh I used to love love love the Berenstain Bears (which I probably just spelled wrong). And Goodnight Moon. And anything by Dr. Seuss or Richard Scarry. I’m forgetting lots of others…but children’s books are so great!

I don’t know how old the little ones are, but I loved Matilda. I read it until the covers fell off. That and the books by Shel Silverstein… Where the Sidewalk Ends, etc. So great!

I loooved the book “Princess Furball”, it’s so cute. And it may be a bit too old for your kids, but I also love “The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel”, such a fun book.

I really loved Green Eggs & Ham and the Serendipity books – the latter always had an animal as the main character, and there was a moral at the end.

I can’t think of a book, but I LOVED being a nanny. LOVED IT. Still love to babysit, tho it’s so hard to find the time with the “grown up” job. :)

Ok, my mom is a preschool teacher and we have an unnatural love for kids’ books. We still buy them for one another.
    Anything written by Eric Carle.
“Diary of a Worm” and the follow up books “Diary of a Spider” and “Diary of a Fly” -hysterical.
Anything written by this guy: http://www.mowillems.com/
Seriously, Mo Willems is the best current children’s author, in my opinion. “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” and “Knuffle Bunny” are two of my current favorite books.

The Giving Tree is the BEST. And maybe I am a giant sap, but it totally makes me tear up.

A bit older, but the greatest children’s novel ever is “The Phantom Tollbooth”.

I used to love the Serendipity book series, too.

I was in search of your ANTM posts you spoke of, but I had to stop and comment on this one. :o ) My first favourite childhood book was the Sesame Street Dictionary. hahahha That’s what my dad used to teach me how to read.

I really love Sandra Boynton books. I wish they had been around when I was little. They are adorable.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs! I looooved that book. The art in it is amazing and i would read it over and over and over again. It’s definitely a great choice for a 2-4 year old. I got it for my daughter recently. Oh and Grover’s “there’s a monster at the end of this book!.” So cute. It’s strange, i never really read where the wild thing are until i was much older.
